The Jenkins Journal

Mrs. Crehan's Class

Dear Jenkins Families,

Scituate Public Schools has just announced the Family Engagement Pilot Program to increase our communication with caregivers as we seek to strengthen “Our Home Away from Home”. You will be hearing from your child’s educators soon about the weekly times they are available to communicate with you about your child’s learning and growth. With this pilot, our twice-yearly conferences will be replaced with more frequent opportunities for you to collaborate with our staff about your child. We are excited to be pioneers in new ways to build home-to-school partnerships!

Jenkins is celebrating Veterans Day with an all-school Red, White, and Blue Day on Thursday, November 10. On this day, our school is hosting a continental breakfast for Veterans in our Jenkins family. Students have invited a Veteran who is a relative or close family friend to join them in our cafeteria on Thursday, November 10. Registrations for this event are closed, however, please call our school office if you have a Veteran who your child would like to invite to this special event.

Nurse Conway is asking for donations of new or gently used sweatpants in a range of children’s sizes. Please send any donations to school with your child, and thank you!

Next week is a busy week at Jenkins! Please check our upcoming school events in this newsletter and remember that the Jenkins website and app are your best source for accurate and up-to-date information.

Thank you for your support in our children’s learning,

Mary M. Oldach, M.Ed.
Principal, Jenkins Elementary School

First Grade Celebrates “My Neighborhood” !

image4-3.jpg

Jenkins First Graders finished Unit 1 in our My VIew reading curriculum by reading and learning about neighborhoods. They read and explored many stories in a variety of genres to gain a full understanding of what a neighborhood is. At the end of the unit, our students applied what they learned as they participated in a project to create our “Jenkins Neighborhood”. Students first worked to build their own homes out of construction paper, markers and crayons. Then they brainstormed many important places and things in our neighborhood such as Jenkins School, Scituate Lighthouse, Scituate Fire Station, playgrounds, and more. They worked cooperatively to create and build the places in Scituate that make it a special place to live. Their final product is a true work of art. We celebrated with a “Neighborhood Block Party” which was a time for all the First Graders to visit with their first-grade “neighbors” from the other classes. It was a beautiful day in our First Grade Neighborhood!

This year all Scituate elementary schools are using the ST Math computer program. This program uses spatial and temporal reasoning to present and teach mathematical concepts with JiJi the Penguin leading them through puzzles. Jenkins classrooms are all participating in a monthly challenge for the most minutes each month in solving math problems and puzzles. The winners in Grades K & 1, 2 & 3, 4 & 5 earn a month with our soft and furry friend JiJi. These top 3 classrooms also receive a raffle ticket for an extra 30 minutes of recess this month. The three classes that spent the most minutes on ST MATH were Mrs. Farwell’s class, Mrs. Johnson's class, and Mrs. Duffy’s class. The class that won the raffle for the most puzzles solved for an extra recess was Mrs. Crehan’s class. Job well done to all!!!
