SPS Reinvests in the Coby Cutler Fitness Center

Coby Cutler

The Coby Cutler Fitness Center renovation project demonstrated Scituate Public School's commitment to maintaining and improving facilities. The district, with the support of Bob Dutch, Director of Business and Finance, was able to fund the renovation through the athletic revolving account. The older carpeted and worn floors have been replaced with modern, durable interlocking rubber mats. Additionally, the fitness center space received a fresh coat of paint, new ceiling tiles were installed and replacement mirrors were put in place as well.  The facility looks great and will be more functional for many years to come!

Coby Cutler was a 1995 Scituate High School graduate who passed away shortly after enlisting in the Marines. Coby was an avid devotee of physical fitness. After Coby’s death, his parents Richard and Quince Cutler donated the Coby Cutler Fitness Center to Scituate in his memory.

Superintendent Burkhead welcomed Coby’s parents to the rededication ceremony on Monday, May 15th. Also in attendance were School Committee members Nicole Brandolini and Peter Gates, district employees including Director of Business and Finance Dr. Bob Dutch, Assistant Athletic Director Chris Alves, High School Assistant Principal Bill Luette, Assistant Facilities Director Chris Cataldo, teacher Mike Timcoe, and Health and Wellness Department Chair Greg Ranieri. Scituate High School Students Oscar Grimshaw, Danny Thompson, and Lauren Thompson attended and spoke at the rededication.

The following are quotes from the Scituate High School speakers:

“I spend most mornings and afternoons in the gym and the revamping from new bars and equipment to floors and mirrors is not only motivating but helps me to focus on my athletic goals. The improvements here are extremely progressive and are sure to attract more students to work on their physical fitness” - Oscar Grimshaw, Grade 10, Scituate High School

“The Coby Cutler Fitness Center has had a profound impact on my life and in all honesty I would not be the person I am today without it.  Spending so much time in the gym gave me the opportunity to learn much more than just how to do a curl or run on a treadmill. The long hours, the sweat, and the tears - made my classmates and I into something so much more than just student athletes. It allowed us to build integrity, leadership, and discipline. - Danny Thompson, Grade 12, Scituate High School

“Personally, the fitness center has given me a space to improve my athletic performance and create friendships. Having a safe and reliable gym has proven to be an essential part in shaping young athletes, and enhancing the athletic environment in and outside of school” - Lauren Thompson, Grade 10, Scituate High School

The Coby Cutler Fitness Center benefits so many people in this community and it is a fitting tribute to Coby Cutler, a young man who wholeheartedly believed in the importance of good health, fitness, and character. Scituate thanks the Cutlers and remembers their son, Coby. - William Burkhead, Superintendent
