Scituate Social Studies Engages Young Citizens
Megan Gregory (PreK-5 Humanities Curriculum Coordinator) and Samantha Lesniak (6-12 Social Studies Department Chair) celebrated how social studies classes in Scituate engage students in active learning to become problem-solving citizens.
Highlighted was how elementary classes teach students to take multiple points of view when learning history. Thanks to a DESE grant, fifth grade teachers have been working with Cohasset educators to engage students in inquiry-based social studies. Through this approach, students learn to ask questions and analyze sources for point of view, among other critical thinking skills.
At the secondary level, students are asked to become problem solvers as they build their historical knowledge, critical thinking and literacy skills. Also highlighted and celebrated was the achievement of students in the four Advanced Placement courses that are currently offered through the SHS Social Studies department.
At both the elementary and secondary level, curriculum leaders discussed the ongoing work to utilize relevant data and resources as they work to refine and enhance instruction.
